Why Winter Weddings in Central Alberta Deserve More Love
After years of working in the wedding industry, there’s one season I wish more couples would consider for their wedding day: winter.
Here in Central Alberta, wedding season tends to be heavily focused on the warmer months. And I understand why. Summer gives us long days, green landscapes and warm evenings.
But there is something about a winter wedding that feels completely different.
It’s romantic. It’s cozy. It can be incredibly beautiful. And honestly, I think winter, especially November and February is one of the most overlooked times of year to get married in Alberta.
As both a bridal hairstylist and wedding photographer in Red Deer, I get to experience weddings from two different perspectives. I’m always thinking about how a day will feel, but also how all of those little details will come together visually.
And winter gives couples so much to work with.

November Weddings Have a Beauty of Their Own
November tends to get overlooked.
It sits between the colourful fall wedding season and Christmas, and couples don’t always immediately think of it as a wedding month.
But that’s part of what I love about it.
November in Central Alberta can give you beautiful neutral landscapes, soft light and that beginning-of-winter feeling without necessarily making your wedding feel like a Christmas wedding.
You can lean into deeper, moodier colours, candlelight, greenery and warm textures or keep everything incredibly clean and timeless with creams, whites and soft neutrals.
There are so many directions you can take it.

And February? So Underrated.
If you want a true Alberta winter wedding, February can be absolutely gorgeous.
Snow-covered landscapes create a naturally beautiful backdrop for wedding portraits, especially when they’re paired with a warm, intimate venue.
There is also something really romantic about the contrast between being outside in the snow for portraits and then coming back inside to candlelight, dinner, drinks and everyone you love.
A winter wedding doesn’t need to feel overly themed.
It can still be modern, editorial, romantic, rustic, elegant or completely minimal.
Winter is simply the backdrop.
Winter Wedding Photos Can Be Incredible
From a photography perspective, winter changes everything.
The landscape becomes much more neutral, which means you become the focus of the photograph.
White snow, bare trees and softer winter tones can create really clean, timeless images without a lot competing for attention in the background.
And you don’t have to spend your entire wedding day outside.
A beautiful indoor venue combined with a short amount of time outside for portraits can give you plenty of variety without asking everyone to freeze for hours.

A Little Winter Wedding Tip
One thing couples should keep in mind is that daylight is much shorter during an Alberta winter.
If outdoor portraits are important to you, your ceremony time and wedding-day timeline matter.
This is something I would plan before finalizing your timeline rather than realizing on the wedding day that the sun is disappearing earlier than expected.
As a wedding photographer, this is exactly the kind of thing I consider when helping couples plan their photography timeline.
Winter Bridal Hair Can Be So Beautiful
And then there’s the hair. 🤍
Winter opens up so many possibilities for bridal styling.
Soft romantic updos, polished buns, textured styles and beautiful waves all work with winter weddings but the right style should always be chosen around your hair, your dress, your accessories and how you want to feel, rather than simply following a seasonal trend.

You Have Permission to Do Something Different
Your wedding doesn’t have to happen between June and September simply because that’s when everyone else gets married.
If you love winter, embrace it.
Choose the gorgeous venue. Bring in the candles. Wear the long sleeves. Step outside into the snow for a few incredible photographs and then head back inside to celebrate.
There is something incredibly intimate about a winter wedding in Alberta and I would genuinely love to see more couples choose it.
November and February might not be the first months you picture when you start planning your wedding.
But maybe they should be.
