How to Choose a Wedding Photographer When You’re Not Comfortable in Front of the Camera
If the thought of having a camera pointed at you for an entire wedding day makes you a little nervous, you are definitely not alone.
One of the things I hear from couples all the time is some version of, “We’re awkward in photos,” or “We have no idea what to do in front of the camera.”
And my answer is always pretty much the same: you don’t need to know what to do. That’s my job.
Your wedding photos shouldn’t feel like hours of stiff posing or trying to figure out where to put your hands. They should feel like you, just with someone there to guide you when you need it and capture everything happening in between.
Look for a photographer whose images feel natural
When you’re looking through wedding galleries, pay attention to more than whether the photos are beautiful.
Do the couples look comfortable? Do you see movement, laughter and genuine interaction? Do the images make you feel something?
Some of my favourite photographs happen in the moments between the “official” photos, the laugh after I give you a ridiculous prompt, the way you automatically reach for each other, or the expression on your face when you’ve completely forgotten I’m there.
Those are the moments I want to preserve.
You don’t have to choose between candid and posed
I think there’s a misconception that natural wedding photography means your photographer gives you absolutely no direction.
For most people, that would actually feel more uncomfortable.
I don’t expect you to magically know what photographs well. I’ll help with where to stand, what to do with your hands, where the light is best and the little adjustments that make a huge difference.
Then I want to give you enough space to actually interact with each other.
It’s less about putting you into a perfect pose and more about creating the conditions for something real to happen.
Choose someone you actually feel comfortable with
Your photographer is around for a lot of your wedding day.
We’re there while you’re getting ready, during emotional moments with your family, when you’re nervous before the ceremony and when you finally get a few quiet minutes together afterward.
Feeling comfortable with the person behind the camera matters.
You should feel like you can laugh, be affectionate, be weird, cry, swear, ask questions and simply be yourselves without feeling like you’re performing for your photographer.
That connection makes a difference in your experience, and I genuinely believe you can see it in the photographs afterward.
Your wedding day doesn’t need to become a photoshoot
Yes, we’re going to set aside time for beautiful portraits.
But I also want you to actually experience your wedding.
I don’t want every moment interrupted because I need to manufacture a photograph. Some moments need a little direction. Others need me to stay quiet, pay attention and let them unfold.
The hugs. The reactions. Your people laughing together. The little touches between you and your partner. The chaos on the dance floor.
Those pieces of the day matter just as much as the portraits.
Tell your photographer what you’re nervous about
If you’re worried about photographs, say it.
Tell me if there’s something you’re self-conscious about. Tell me if you hate a certain angle. Tell me if you tend to freeze when someone tells you to smile.
That information helps me photograph you better.
You don’t need to arrive on your wedding day suddenly feeling like a professional model. You just need a photographer who knows how to read people, give direction when it’s needed and make the experience feel easy.
The right photographer should make you feel more like yourself, not less
When you look back at your wedding gallery, I don’t want you to see a version of yourselves that I created.
I want you to recognize yourselves in it.
The way you look at each other. The people you love. The energy of the day. The quiet moments you didn’t realize anyone saw.
So if you’re searching for a wedding photographer and thinking, “But we’re terrible in front of the camera,” don’t let that stop you.
You don’t have to be good at being photographed.
You just need to be there, together, enjoying your wedding.
I’ll take care of the rest.
